Registration of Sri Lankan Migrant Workers

Provision

As per the Section 53(3) of the SLBFE Act No: 21 of 1985 as amended by Act No:04 of 1994 and 56 of 2009, every Sri Lankan leaving for a foreign employment requires to register with the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau prior to such leaving.

Important

A migrant worker, who is not registered with SLBFE is not entitled to any coverage/ benefit provided by the SLBFE at any given situation

All Sri Lankans leaving abroad for employment are requested to pay registration fees prior to their departure from Sri Lanka

Registration Fees : LKR 15,200+ VAT 15%+ NBT 2%

The Registration is valid only for a period of two years with the same employer.

If any Sri Lankan wishes to extend the employment beyond the original period of contract, the employee is requested to renew the registration prior to the expiration of the existing registration by paying the renewal fee.

Renewal Fees : LKR 3,200+ Vat 15%+ NBT 2%

Special Note: The Migrant Worker cannot apply for SLBFE Registration at the Embassy for the first time and they can only apply for renewal of the registration at the Embassy

Hence, under special circumstances the Embassy provides the first time registration for the Sri Lankan migrant workers who currently employed in Egypt and other accredited countries.

Welfare & Assistance extended to Sri Lankan Migrant Workers

The Labour & Welfare section of the Embassy will assist to ensure the well-being of the Sri Lankan Migrant workers in Oman and accredited country; Yemen. The Labour & Welfare section together with the Consular section of the Embassy coordinates with the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment for matters pertaining to labour welfare and assistance.

The official of the Labour & Welfare section of this Mission cannot be held responsible for the delay in attendance on the grievances of migrant workers, If the he/she has not registered with the SLBFE.

Accordingly, all migrant workers are advised to be registered with the SLBFE prior to the departure from Sri Lanka for the employment purpose.

A Sri Lankan Migrant worker in Oman or an accredited country; Yemen can make complaints to the Embassy by visiting in person or any other reliable way. The complaint for migrant workers can be downloaded here.

Ensuring the welfare of Sri Lankan migrant workers in Oman or an accredited country; Yemen

  • Resolving labour disputes/issues through discussion with sponsors, agents and the employees
  • Settling of disputes as per to the employer- employee agreement
  • Liaising with the host government authorities for resolving the labour issues
  • Providing Counseling services
  • Assisting to the workers who are ill or hospitalized
  • Facilitating the repatriation of migrant workers on their requests/ requests received from Sri Lanka
  • Visits to the work sites whenever required
  • Visits to Prisons, Persecution, Police and other institutes related to labor welfare matters
  • Facilitating to extend the contracts of the Employment
  • Assisting for the repatriation/ burial of Human Remains of the deceased migrant workers
