General Information

Immigration and Emigration Department of Sri Lanka is the Competent Authority to issue a visa to enter to Sri Lanka. Visit DI&E (Directs to www.immigration.gov.lk)

Sri Lanka Department of Immigration and Emigration issues the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA- an Electronic Visa) for all Holiday or Business travellers who are entering in to Sri Lanka with effect from 01st January 2012. The ETA requirement is applicable to all nationalities except nationals of the Republic of Singapore, the Republic of Maldives and the Republic of Seychelles on the basis of reciprocity.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Applicants are strictly advised to visit the Official Website of the ETA to obtain the service and the Embassy shall NOT be responsible for the visas applied for Sri Lanka through the websites APART FROM Official Website of the ETA.

When applying ETA by third parties, payments are to be made through the arrangement made in Official Website of the ETA and obtain acknowledgement of ETA application. Any payments made to other websites or agencies are not valid to process a valid ETA. Therefore, always ensure that the payments made by accessing to Sri Lanka ETA website and avoid making repayment at the port of entry to Sri Lanka.

Sri Lankan Visa

A Sri Lankan visa is an endorsement on a passport or a similar travel document issued by a Government with the objective of facilitating the legal entry of non-Sri Lankans into Sri Lanka, regulating the period and conditions governing their stay.

The competent authority for issuing Sri Lankan visas is the Department of Immigration and Emigration. On behalf of the Department of Immigration and Emigration, Sri Lanka Diplomatic Missions abroad have been authorized to issue visas.

General Eligibility Requirements for Sri Lankan Visas

Sri Lanka Immigration and Emigration may grant or issue a visa to you if

  1. Sri Lanka Immigration & Emigration is satisfied that you are suitable to enter Sri Lanka
  2. Sri Lanka Immigration & Emigration approves the purpose for which you are entering Sri Lanka
  3. You hold a passport valid for a minimum period of six months from the date you arrive in Sri Lanka
  4. Sri Lanka Immigration & Emigration is satisfied that you have adequate funds for your maintenance whilst in Sri Lanka and for the payment of your return passage to the country that issued your passport
  5. You are in possession of a written assurance (air ticket) to return to the country of domicile or a visa to the next country of destination

Who are Eligible for Visa Exemptions?

  • Sri Lankan dual citizens
  • Children up to 21 years of age whose birth has been registered under section 5(2) of the Citizenship Act – 1948
  • Children under 21 years of age and born in Sri Lanka to Sri Lankan parents who hold a foreign nationality
