Sri Lankan Roadshow – 2024

The Embassy of Sri Lanka together with Sri Lanka Business Council Initiative (SLBCI) in the Sultanate of Oman successfully hosted the Sri Lankan Roadshow – 2024 for the first time on a magnificent scale, under the theme of ‘Serendib the Golden Island’, promoting Sri Lankan Culture, Tourism, and Trade, on 05th July (Friday) 2024 at the Oasis Mall, Muscat. The Event was arranged with the aim of showcasing Sri Lanka as a premier travel destination to attract tourists during the summer vacation in Oman as well as to portray Sri Lankan vibrant culture and trade opportunities.

With the active participation of the Sri Lankan expatriate community in Oman, the event created a lasting impression of Sri Lanka among Omanis and expatriates alike in the Sultanate, fostering cultural exchange and strengthening bilateral economic ties.

The event commenced by welcoming the Chief Guest Sri Lankan Ambassador to the Sultanate of Oman Sabarullah Khan by beating the traditional drums and with a procession of Sri Lankan children representing the multiethnic groups of Sri Lanka. The procession led to the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony followed by lighting of the traditional oil lamp which opened the floor to the Roadshow. Subsequently, an introductory video was played showcasing Sri Lankan culture, trade and tourism followed by the opening remarks by the Counsellor/Head of Chancery Anodya Chirasrie.

Sri Lankan traditional Puja dance, called ‘Mangalam’ dance was the opening performance to seek blessings from Gods and Mother Earth by the Sri Lankan School Muscat (SLSM) students to packed audience. Then, the sponsors were introduced by the Emcees, followed by another traditional dance named Kohomba Hella and Ravana representing significant aspect of Sri Lankan dances. The Kohomba Hella is the crucial part of Kohomba Kankariya, a traditional exorcism ritual in Sri Lanka meant to expel evil spirits and Ravana dance showcases the strength, power, and aesthetic interests of Ravana through traditional Sri Lankan dance movements, choreographed by teachers of SLSM Dance Club.

The Inauguration ceremony was concluded with the Video Message by the Chairman, Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, Mr. Chalaka Gajabahu, followed by special guests visiting the promotional stands at the venue.

Next segment of the Roadshow was commenced with the Sri Lankan history depicted up to Portuguese, Dutch and British colonization by the Emcees with a visual presentation on screen simultaneously, followed by the Sri Lankan Calipso band, Sinhayo, performance portraying the history of the tea plantation initiation during the colonial era.

Walking interview with the Ambassador was held where he explained the importance of organizing such an event in a grand scale after ceasing of COVID Pandemic restrictions; since the country has opened up it will be an added advantage to promote Sri Lankan trade and tourism abroad. He also mentioned that this is a good opportunity to showcase what Sri Lanka has to offer to the Omani and Expatriate communities. Further explaining he mentioned the current trade balance is in favour of Oman and Sri Lanka can balance it by increasing exports to Oman and added that the Sri Lanka Business Council Initiative had been established with the aim of creating platforms to strengthen economic relationship between the two countries.

Another magnificent dancing performance ‘Chamara Dance’, choreographed by Visharad Sasikala Abeysuriya, a Sri Lankan living in the Sultanate of Oman followed. The meaning of the Chamara Dance which was performed during ancient times by the fan bearers of the King as a ritual was to honour the King & other royals. Currently, one can witness this form of dance at the Esala Perahera (Great Procession) Kandy, Sri Lanka annually held to honour the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha.

There were spot questions for the Omani and expatriates at the venue and spot prizes were awarded. Associate sponsors were interviewed on spot followed by interview of the Sri Lanka Business Council Initiative team by the Emcees. A dance portraying the eternal beauty and grace of Shree Krishna was performed by two Tamil students living in the Sultanate, subsequently, tasting Sri Lankan traditional sweetmeats and Ceylon tea was introduced to the audience with visualizing the Ceylon Tea videos on the screen.

The Kandyan dance, highly sophisticated and refined National Dance of Sri Lanka, was performed by the students of Visharad Sasikala Abeysuriya, followed by two Sri Lankan solo songs, portraying Sri Lankan culture and tradition by Mr. Yasas Abeysuriya. An introductory video on Sri Lankan tourism and hospitality industry was also played.

For the Arabic version of the popular ‘Manike Mage Hithe’ song, which is the first Sri Lankan song to get more than 200 million views in YouTube and sparked global attention, sung by the famous Sri Lankan singer Yohani, dance was performed with the Arabic attire by the students of Visharad Sasikala Abeysuriya. The second segment of the Roadshow was concluded with the interviews of the Silver and Gold sponsors by the Emcees.

With the arrival of Omani officials from the Foreign and Heritage & Tourism Ministries along with the members of the Diplomatic corps and the sponsors, the Closing Ceremony was started, and the welcome speech was delivered by the Ambassador of Sri Lanka. The VIPs were mesmerized with the scenic beauty and the charm of Sri Lanka through a fascinating video, followed by the dance performance themed ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean’ and choreographed by Visharad Sasikala Abeysuriya by children. Presentations from the three Platinum sponsors were also showcased.

A Traditional Drums & Instrumental Display was showcased by the students of Visharad Sasikala Abeysuriya. Then the audience was treated to an elegant Fashion Show, which is truly a universal language, and was witnessed to a breathtaking conversation full of color, texture, design and Sri Lankan tradition & culture. The stunning designs and performance were portrayed by Roshani Rajapakse, living in the Sultanate.

The cultural performances were concluded with the mesmerizing dance ‘Hela Thala Rata’ which is a tale that exemplifies Sri Lanka’s proud history and opulent culture, demonstrating ‘Angampora’, Sinhalese Martial Art, traditional Kandyan dance, captivating display of ‘Gara Yaka’, a dancing performance of demon who protects from the evil-eye as to the Sri Lankan tradition, choregraphed by Visharad Sasikala Abeysuriya.

As the final item of the Roadshow, Raffle Draw was held for the Omani and other nationals; the grand prize was all-inclusive vacation of 6 nights/7 days in Sri Lanka for two persons offered by the Green Holiday and was won by Yousuf Al-Busaidi, an Omani national and the consecutive Raffle Prizes were won by Vasanthakumar K.L, Wessam Moustafa, Arif and Lulu Al Sarji.

Over 500 Sri Lankans residing in the Sultanate and more than 500 Omanis and other nationals were accumulated at the Oasis Mall in Al Khuwair to enjoy the Sri Lankan authentic taste and culture.

The Embassy is pleased to announce the first Sri Lankan Roadshow, organized under the theme of ‘Serendib the Golden Island’, by the Embassy of Sri Lanka in the Sultanate of Oman together with the Sri Lanka Business Council Initiative (SLBCI), promoting Sri Lankan Culture, Tourism, and Trade, which is to be held on 05th July (Friday) 2024 from 3.00 p.m. to 9.00 p.m. at the Oasis Mall, Al Khuwair, Muscat, in the Sultanate of Oman. The Event is arranged with the aim of showcasing Sri Lanka as a premier travel destination to attract tourists during the summer vacation in Oman as well as to portray Sri Lankan vibrant culture and trade opportunities.

With the active participation of the Sri Lankan expatriate community in Oman, the event seeks to create lasting impression of Sri Lanka among Omani and expatriates alike, fostering cultural exchange and strengthening bilateral economic ties. The roadshow will offer a variety of experiences to make the Omani and foreign visitors to explore various charm and joys of Sri Lanka, aiming to spread awareness about Sri Lanka’s exciting adventure and thrill, wild and scenic, pristine and heritage, bliss, and essence by the Sri Lankan tour operators. Further, the Embassy is planning to invite about 100 VIPs comprising Omani and foreign high dignitaries from the Omani Government and Diplomatic corps based in the Sultanate.

The event is comprised with series of cultural activities showcasing Sri Lankan traditional dances, music, a fashion show to display the Sri Lankan traditional costumes and apparel industry and stands promoting Sri Lankan trade products such as Ceylon Tea, Ceylon spices, and Confectionaries etc.

In the ancient times, Sri Lanka was indeed renowned among Arab traders by the name ‘Serendib’. The island’s rich resources, exotic spices, and strategically important location in the center of the maritime Silk Route between China and Europe, made it a significant trading hub in the Indian Ocean, attracting merchants from various parts of the world, including Arabs. This historical connection between Sri Lanka and Arab traders contributed to the enhancement of people-to-people connection and socio- economic exchanges from ancient era to date.

Sri Lanka is one of the leading tourist destinations which is gaining its top ranking among the leading tourism destinations in the world. Sri Lanka has now attracted some 800K tourists so far in 2024. It is believed that the Middle East, especially Oman’s steadily growing middle and upper-class population with a substantial income and interest in international travel will have a positive impact on the growing tourism market in Sri Lanka.

Previously, there were B-B sessions held at closed doors, promoting Sri Lanka tourism in Oman. This will be the first occasion where we approach the Omani citizens and other foreign expatriates residing in the Sultanate in a mass scale at a mall premises.

Vesak Celebration in Muscat -2024

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Muscat commemorated the Vesak Ceremony for the year 2024 in a grand scale with great respect to the noble triple events of the birth, enlightenment and passing away of Lord Gautama Buddha, conducting a series of religious activities such as offering alms to Maha Sanga, blood donation & Medical campaign, showcasing spectacular Vesak Pandol and giving alms at Dansal together with the Sri Lankan community in the Sultanate of Oman at the Embassy premises, from 17th to 25th May 2024.

The main Vesak Poya Day Sil programme was conducted by the Venerable Kelaniye Ajitha Thero and Venerable Galkisse Somananda Thero, who arrived in the Sultanate as per the invitation of the temple committee of the Sambuddhathawa Jayanthi Viharaya and with the coordination of the Embassy.

In addition to the main ceremony at the temple, the Spectacular Vesak Pandol (Vesak Thorana) delivering the story of the Swarna Mayura Jathaka tale was erected by three Sri Lankan expatriates in Oman, at the Embassy premises in coordination with the Embassy. The spectacular Vesak pandol was inaugurated by the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Sultanate of Oman A.L. Sabarullah Khan in the midst of the Pirith chanted by the two venerable Theros in the evening on 21st May 2024. The Ambassador especially thanked Mrs. Roshani Rajapakshe for the Art designs and Mr. J.P. Priyantha and Mr. Saranga Anjana Rajeewa for decorations and lighting designs of the Vesak Pandol and other volunteers for their tiresome work over the day and nights to erect the pandol in a massive and elegant manner in the Sultanate. In parallel to the Vesak Pandol, the staff of the Embassy organized Kadala and Ginger tea Dansala and marking the International Tea Day on 21st May it was started and continued until 25th May 2024.

Starting from 17th May to 25th May, Sambuddha Puja were held at the temple with a considerable gathering and Sil programme was held during the weekends. Ambassador Sabarullah Khan graced the event of main Sambuddha Puja on the poya day evening held at the temple. While welcoming the two Buddhist monks from Sri Lanka, the Ambassador highlighted the significance of this solemn occasion commemorating the Vesak ceremony and marking the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the General Assembly Resolution 54/115, which recognized internationally the Day of Vesak, initiation of Sri Lanka.

Commemorating Vesak event, the Ambassador and the staff offered alms to the two Ven. Monks at the Official Residence of the Ambassador on 20th May 2024 as a continuous religious activity during the week of Vesak celebration. The committee of the Sambuddhathawa Jayanthi Viharaya and the Sri Lankan Social Club in Oman in coordination with the Embassy organized Blood Donation and Free Medical Campaign at the Embassy premises on Saturday, 18th May 2024 from 8.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m. Most of the Sri Lankans serving in the Sultanate and Embassy staff members donated blood at the event.

Sambuddha Puja, Damma sermons, Dansalas of various groups and Spectacular Vesak Pandol organized for commemorating Vesak festival and the events were continued for a week and considerable Sri Lankan Buddhist devotees and nearly 2000 Sri Lankans residing in the Sultanate, including multi religious communities visited the Embassy premises to witness the Vesak celebration held at the Embassy and temple premises.

The Sinhala and Tamil New Year Celebrations in Muscat

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Muscat celebrated Sinhala and Tamil New Year by arranging and facilitating multiple events in Muscat, Oman bringing Sri Lankan expatriates from all walks of life together. The events symbolically commenced with celebrations at the Embassy premises on 14th April, 2024, with lighting the traditional oil lamp followed by enjoying Sri Lankan traditional sweetmeats in the special Awrudu table organized by the staff of the Embassy that was open to the public to taste Awrudu Rasa kewili.

The Embassy supported the temple committee of Sri Sambuddhathwa Jayanthi in organizing a Pirith Chanting Ceremony on the 14th April 2024, for invoking blessings of the Triple Gems. The Ambassador and staff of the Embassy joined the devotees at the Buddhist Temple premises for the occasion.

In addition, the Embassy of Sri Lanka collaboratively joined together with the Sri Lanka Community Social Club in Oman in organizing the mega event, Oman Spring Down -2024. It was a colorful festival of celebrations of the Sinhala & Tamil New Year that brought traditional Avurudu games and display of customs and rituals on Friday 19th April 2024 at the Wadi Kabir Stadium in the Sultanate. Nearly 3000 Sri Lankan migrant workers of multiple faiths with their families and friends harmoniously gathered at the stadium for enjoying the traditional events.

The Ambassador of Sri Lanka was the chief guest at the opening ceremony of the event where he appraised the efforts wielded by the Sri Lanka Community Social Club in Oman for organizing the Oman Spring Down-2024 in a grand scale bringing the largest gathering ever in the recent times. He appreciated the Club members for giving the opportunity to the Sri Lankan children to learn the tradition and culture of their motherland in the distant city. He also introduced the Embassy’s Mobile Consular Service stall at the stadium to the gathering and invited them to get maximum use of the consular services offered at the location. The opening ceremony was followed by the Buddhist and Hindu traditional rituals and cultural show by the Sri Lankan families and children. Aurudu games such as seed counting, balloon bursting, sack race, wheelbarrow race, kamba edima, lime & spoon, fancy dress parade, buns eating etc, for the children and adults were also held. The celebration was concluded with an awesome Avurudu Kumara & Avurudu Kumariya contest as well as cultural dances & musical show.

The Embassy of Sri Lanka hosts annual Iftar Programme

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Muscat hosted its annual Iftar Dinner Programme on Friday, 05th April 2024 at the official residence lawn with a considerable gathering of Sri Lankan Muslim Community and the non- Muslim community representatives residing in Oman, marking the Maghrib (sunset) of the day and breaking the fast after the daylong fast in the holy month of Ramadan. Iftar dinner combined with spiritual exchange turned individual practices into a social experience of unity and brotherhood.

Sri Lanka Celebrates International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day originated through the labour movement in 1908, when 15,000 women in the garment industry marched in New York City to demand shorter hours, higher wages, suffrage and child labor.  The International Women’s Day was officially recognized by the United Nations in 1977 when the United Nations celebrated the day.

A national celebration of International Women’s Day was held for the first time in Sri Lanka in 1978. Since then, the government has taken measures to empower women through a series of concurrent programs and a national celebration on various themes every year.

The theme of 2024 International Women’s Day is ‘Rapid progress through women’s investment’, and at the same time, ‘Strength for her – Progress for God’ has been used as the national theme in Sri Lanka.  The National Celebration in Sri Lanka takes place on March 08, 2024 under the chairmanship of the Honorable President, and many concurrent programs are implemented on the days before and after March 08 under the leadership of the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Empowerment.

The Sri Lanka Embassy in Muscat marks the day with special activities to thank some 19,000 strong Sri Lankan female workforce in the Sultanate who are diligently contributing to the socio-economic development of the two countries.

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Muscat organizes Business Networking High-Tea Session

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Muscat together with the Sri Lanka Business Council Initiative (SLBCI) organized a Business Networking High Tea Session on 28.02.2024 at the Official Residence, as a step towards forming an Oman – Sri Lanka Business Council, with the view to augmenting the Oman – Sri Lanka Economic Cooperation.  More than 70 Omani and Sri Lankan businessmen, entrepreneurs and professionals were gathered. 

Ambassador Sabarullah Khan in his welcome remarks explained creation of the SLBCI under the patronage of the Embassy which sets the foundation for forming an Oman – Sri Lanka Business Council in the near future.  The Counsellor of the Embassy Ms. Anodya Chirasrie highlighted the existing avenues for bringing the Oman – Sri Lanka Economic Cooperation forward to its next high level.  Elaborating objectives of the formed SLBCI, the Counsellor further explained the emerging necessity of having public – private business partnerships in the two countries at a single platform.

The members of SLBCI were introduced to the Omani and other stakeholders, focusing on more opportunities as well as collaborations and partnerships between Sri Lanka and Oman. The event was also dedicated to raising awareness about Sri Lankan products and services to the Omani market while promoting Sri Lankan businesses and service sectors already established in the Sultanate of Oman.

The event fostered understanding and the appreciation for the initiative taken by the Embassy for forming the said the business council among attendees, which will serve as the catalyst  for future collaboration and knowledge sharing among experts in the field, paving the way forward for growth and exploration of holistic economic cooperation.

The Official Flag Hoisting Ceremony at the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Muscat

The 76th Anniversary of Independence of Sri Lanka was officially celebrated by the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Muscat on 4th February 2024 at the Embassy premises with the participation of the Sri Lankan expatriates in the Sultanate of Oman.

The Independence Day event commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag by the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Sultanate of Oman A.L. Sabarullah Khan, followed by the singing of the National Anthem.  A two-minute silence was observed in remembrance and honour of all patriots who sacrificed their lives for our motherland. Thereafter, community representatives joined the lighting of traditional oil lamp, which was followed by religious sermons and blessings by Priests of four major faiths in Sri Lanka through digital media.

The Independence Day message of President Ranil Wickremesinghe was read by the Counsellor/Head of Chancery of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Sinhala language and Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena was read by the Ambassador in Tamil language while the Independence Day message of Foreign Minister M.U.M Ali Sabry was read by Counsellor/ Employment & Welfare in English.

Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Sabarullah Khan greeted the Sri Lankan community in Oman, extending his gratitude for their great support and paid tribute to H.M. Sultan, government and people of the Sultanate of Oman for the continued support extended to Sri Lanka.  Ambassador highlighted the activities of the Embassy and achievements in the bilateral relations during the past one-year period, including the labour welfare facilities extended, exhibitions and trade enhancing initiatives launched by the Embassy.  He invited all members of the Sri Lankan community who live in the Sultanate of Oman to join hands by extending their cooperation to work for the peace and prosperity of Sri Lanka while explaining the yearlong action plan of the Embassy and his ambition in promotion of Sri Lankan Tourism and economic ties with the Sultanate.

Counsellor, Head of Chancery Ms. Anodya Chirasrie delivered vote of thanks. The event was concluded with Sri Lankan traditional breakfast for all guests.

Almsgiving Ceremony at the Official Residence

The Sri Lanka Embassy in Muscat participated in the Diplomatic Charity Bazaar 2023 at the Diplomatic Club on 27th November 2023, organized By the Foreign Ministry of the Sultanate of Oman for friendly Diplomatic Missions with the participation of the Charity organizations and small-scale establishments in the Sultanate of Oman.

The event was inaugurated by His Excellency Khalid bin Hashil bin Mohammed Al Muslahi, Undersecretary for Administrative and Financial Affairs of the Foreign Ministry to generate funds for charity and humanitarian activities across the Sultanate of Oman. The charity Bazaar featured more than 50 stalls, representing Diplomatic Missions and other organizations based in the Sultanate, showcasing a wide array of products in the field of culture, fashion, food and handicraft.

Captivating Sri Lankan traditional dance was performed at the inauguration ceremony by the students of the Sri Lankan School Muscat. Attending the event’s opening ceremony, the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Sultanate of Oman, A.L. Sabarullah Khan opened the Sri Lankan stall at the Charity Bazaar. Covering different dimensions of Sri Lankan trade and tourism, the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Muscat showcased Ceylon tea, spices, handicrafts and fashions and Sri Lankan traditional cuisines. The Sri Lankan Business Community in the Sultanate, Bread Box, Lankan Grocery and Curry pot promoted Sri Lankan spices and food products while Akbar Tea and Al Falaj Hotel in Muscat provided Ceylon tea.

Visitors to the Sri Lanka stall were served with free cup of Ceylon tea throughout the event.

The Embassy of Sri Lanka together with the Sri Lankan Hindu Community in the Sultanate of Oman organized the Deepavali Celebration 2023 at the official Residence lawn of the Sri Lanka Ambassador on 25th November 2023, in parallel to the sacred festival of lights revered by Hindus worldwide, on 11 November 2023. Nearly 100 members representing diverse Sri Lankan communities residing in Oman were gathered for the celebration.

Addressing the gathering, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Sultanate of Oman A.L. Sabarullah Khan extended heartfelt wishes for a prosperous Deepavali to all Hindu devotees and highlighted the significance of Deepavali, the victory of knowledge over ignorance representing illumination of light over darkness. Welcoming the diverse Sri Lankan community gathered, he expressed gratitude to the Hindu community for decorating and lighting the premises, colourfully.

The celebration featured an introduction to Deepavali, Dhaandiya Dance, devotional story drama and Deepavali fusion dance which were performed by the students of the Hindu religion class of the Sri Lankan community in Muscat. As a special event, attendees were captivated by the Deepam decoration contest, and three winners were awarded gifts. Infusing the atmosphere with colourful nights, the students of the Hindu class lighted the sparkle.

The Deepavali celebrations showcased holistic solidarity and friendship among the multi-religious and multiethnic Sri Lankan community members in the Sultanate.

Gracing the Roadshow of the Postgraduate Institute of Management(PIM), Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Sultanate of Oman Sabarullah Khan encouraged participants to follow PIM/MBA course in Muscat & pledged institutional support to obtain accreditation for PIM in the Sultanate.
The event was held on 13th October 2023 at Al Falaj Hotel, Muscat.

Promoting Sri Lankan Food & Hospitality sectors in Muscat

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Muscat participated in the Food and Hospitality Oman (FHO) 2023 from 18th – 20th September 2023 at the Oman Convention & Exhibition Center (OCEC) in Muscat. The Embassy showcased Sri Lankan Food products including bakery items, Ceylon tea & beverages, spices, rice etc, at the exhibition booth together with the Sri Lankan business entities in Oman while promoting Sri Lankan Tourism & Hospitality sector.

The Embassy of Sri Lanka participated at the 32nd Edition of COMEX 2023 held at the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre from 22 -25 May 2023, showcasing Sri Lankan #ICT strengths.
The 32nd COMEX Annual Exhibition was the 2nd largest Technology show in the Middle East Region while being the biggest Technology, Communication, Innovation and Digital Transformation Show in the Sultanate of Oman. The event included Exhibition, Conference, Awards, Workshops, Seminars, Training Programs and B2B meetings.
More than 160 exhibitors, more than 18,000 visitors were gathered.

Vesak Ceremony and Lantern Competition-2023

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Muscat arranged a series of events together with the Sri Lankan community in the Sultanate to celebrate the Vesak festival 2023 under the theme of “the serenity of the mind”.  In parallel to the Vesak week declared by the Government of Sri Lanka, the Embassy is continuing with commemorative programmes in respect to the noble triple events of the birth, enlightenment and passing away of Lord Gautama Buddha, who is worshiped as one of the greatest religious scholars who came to this world.
